Summary: When she woke up, she was alone in the room, if not in her head.
When she woke up, she was alone in the room, if not in her head. At first, she screamed and flung insults--everything she knew in her language and a few her husband had taught her in his--but the demon in her head just laughed. She would have scratched and bit and torn the vile thing from her skull, if only she could have moved so much as a finger. It was a cloying, claustrophobic feeling and when her anger finally died down, she slunk away into a corner of her mind and wondered if she was going mad.
That is right, slave, the demon sneered, smug and contemptuous. I am a God. You are weakness itself compared to my glory.
She could see the demon’s thoughts, sift though its memories like grains of sand through fingers. It was a petted, pampered demon, waited on by slaves and cosseted by its demon-lord. It had never dug rock from the ground until its fingers bled, had never ground flour with stone to bake its own bread. It had never heard the history of its people from secret caves and sparked a rebellion to slay a god that was not.
She did not reply to the demon’s taunt and the demon thought itself the victor. Sha’re smiled to herself and let the demon think her weak. Not-gods could be killed; one just had to wait for the right moment.
That moment would come--and then they would see who was strong.
Table here.
